The Orphan of Zhao Victor WongBritish East Asian Artists
November 30, 2012
It seems that the various reviews (even the most positive ones), articles and blog posts made mention of the Zhao casting debacle.
Stage (news): "Arts Council England, Equity, the Society of London Theatre and the Theatrical Management Association are to host an event next year to address the issues surrounding work opportunities for East Asian artists in UK theatre." http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/2012/11/london-event-to-be-held-to- address-east-asian-actors-concerns/? utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=london-event- to-be-held-to-address-east-asian-actors-concerns.
BBC: "When casting for the production was announced there was criticism that there aren't more Asian performers in it. The RSC pointed out that the same pool of actors has to work across two other plays in the same season, neither of which has a Chinese connection." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment- arts-20242623
Standard: "Ahead of its opening, there’s been controversy about the casting choices made for the RSC’s first ever Chinese play. Many have protested that performers of East Asian heritage are under-represented — there are only three, all in minor roles." http://www.standard.co.uk/arts/theatre/the-orphan-of- zhao-rsc-swan-stratforduponavon--review-8300387.html
Express: "Sadly, this production has been soured by controversy with some Asian actors complaining that too few parts have been given to Chinese performers." http://www.expressandstar.com/entertainment/theatre/2012/11/09/review- the-orphan-of-zhao-at-the-rsc-stratford/
Stage: "It’s difficult to divorce Gregory Doran’s production of the play sometimes referred to as the Chinese Hamlet from the controversy that has surrounded it." http://www.thestage.co.uk/reviews/review.php/37681/the-orphan-of-zhao
Guardian: "This production of a Chinese classic has already caused controversy because only three actors out of a cast of 17 are of east Asian origin." http:// www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2012/nov/09/the-orphan-of-zao-review
Stage (letter): "...comments posted on the RSC’s Facebook page include one by a deeply upset teacher of East Asian background who said she would not be taking her students to see this production, and one by a concerned mother of two mixed-race East Asian children, who now worries about her offspring’s interest in pursuing theatrical careers." http://www.thestage.co.uk/features/analysis- opinion/2012/11/letters-of-the-week-3/
Telegraph: "But while the poster shows a picture of young Chinese boy, only three East Asians have been cast in the show, all of them small roles." http:// www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/theatre-reviews/9667124/The-Orphan- of-Zhao-Swan-Theatre-Stratford-upon-Avon-review.html
BBC: "...I'd love to see you [three East-Asian cast members] in lead roles..."
Birmingham Post: "During the first half of the 18th century, when the fashion for Chinoiserie was at its height, it was translated into French, English and Italian, and there was even a version by Voltaire." http://www.birminghampost.net/life- leisure-birmingham-guide/birmingham-culture/theatre-in-birmingham/ 2012/11/09/review-the-orphan-of-zhao-swan-theatre-stratford-upon- avon-92746-32201926/#ixzz2BnKNvsxF
Madame Miaow (blog): "Not having a "Chinese connection"..." http:// madammiaow.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/anna-and-lucy-go-to-stratford-rsc.html
FPD (blog): "In an informal survey, out of the approximately 100 or so Actors who were of East Asian descent that they could have called, the RSC called eight. Eight." http://fairyprincessdiaries.com/2012/11/09/british-critics-buggering- the-rsc/
